The heart of the Yeshiva — the beis medrash
Major milestones
From its founding to the present day

Hagaon Hatzaddik Rav Hillel Vitkind zt”l, one of the foremost disciples of the Alter of Novardok zy”a, comes on his own to Eretz Hakodesh from Europe on a holy mission, with great mesirus nefesh. Before the flourishing of the Olam HaTorah and the yeshivos in Eretz Yisrael, he sets down the cornerstone for a makom Torah — founding “Yeshivas Beis Yosef” in Tel Aviv, in the spirit of the European Novardoker yeshivas.

After the Yeshiva flourishes in Tel Aviv and expands to receive many talmidim, Rav Hillel zt”l moves to Bnei Brak for its further development. Together with his great son-in-law, Hagaon Ha’adir Rav Mordechai Man zt”l, he begins a rare and marvelous period of harbatzas Torah. The groundbreaking in Bnei Brak takes place in the presence of the gedolei ume’orei hador zy”a.

On י״ט אלול תשל״ד, the petirah of the founder and Rosh Yeshiva, Hagaon Hatzaddik Rav Hillel Vitkind zt”l. His son-in-law, Rav Mordechai Man zt”l, becomes the sole Rosh Yeshiva. He delivers shiurim regularly and writes up his crystal-clear shiurim as sefer Divrei Mordechai on Shas — a basic text for the bnei aliyah of the generation.

On ד׳ אדר תשנ״ז, the petirah of the Rosh Hayeshiva, Hagaon Hagadol Rav Mordechai Man zt”l. His two sons are appointed to serve as Roshei Hakollel — Hageonim Hagedolim Rav Eliyahu Man shlita and Rav Yaakov Yosef Man shlita. At that time, the Kollel numbers 140 avreichim, all exceptional talmidei chachamim.

The number of avreichim increases and demand grows. When the Beis Medrash is no longer large enough, it is expanded to about 550 seats for the hundreds of avreichim immersed in learning. These too fill up at an accelerated rate, until many requesting to join the “King’s Legion” have to be turned away.

The year of Corona, when the world order turns upside down. To keep the sedarim going while adhering to health directives — “V’nishmartem me’od l’nafshoseichem” — it is decided to vacate the Ezras Nashim balcony and connect it to the Beis Medrash. For a month they work day and night to prepare the place with the necessary space between the lomdim.

The Corona departs, but the Beis Medrash remains. Demand keeps growing until two batei medrash are set up: the lower floor holds 500 seats, while the upper floor holds about 320 additional seats.

Legions of talmidei chachamim devote themselves tirelessly to limud haTorah, day and night. Over 850 outstanding scholars — young alongside older avreichim, the cream of the Olam Hayeshivos — occupy the Beis Medrash from morning to night. Many alumni today serve as Roshei Yeshiva, maggidei shiurim, rabbanim and dayanim. As Maran Sar HaTorah zy”a attested in his own handwriting: “From there, Torah radiates to all of Yisrael.”
What sets it apart
The Special Virtues of Kollel Beis Hillel
The Kollel is set up in Yeshiva format, with everyone learning the same topic with ris’cha d’Oraysa and great dibbuk chaveirim. First seder — 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; Minchah and a rest. Second seder — 4:00 p.m. to 7:10 p.m.; mussar seder at 7:10, Maariv at 7:30.
Understanding that continuity in learning is a major factor in aliyah baTorah, the Kollel has a kabbalah not to bring cell phones into the Beis Medrash during learning hours. A person in the office can be phoned in urgent situations and will call the avreich.
The Kollel places great emphasis on punctuality, a major prerequisite for a ben aliyah. The sidrei haKollel are respectfully enforced in an incomparably special way.
The Kollel learns one maseches commonly learned in the yeshivos and one that isn’t, alternating over a 20-year cycle, until in time all the avreichim know the entire Shas b’iyun, with profound understanding.
At the start of every zeman, the Kollel puts out an orderly collection of Mefarshim on all the sugyos to be learned, so the avreichim needn’t hunt for sefarim. Exceptional talmidei chachamim also prepare lists of sources for deeper exploration.
Each month every avreich writes the chiddushei Torah he thought of in first seder. Typists are provided for those who write by hand. Each gives the Rosh Kollel a typed chaburah; a staff of talmidei chachamim reviews them — adding, commenting and clarifying, k’darkah shel Torah — and returns them with illuminating comments.
Second seder emphasizes covering ground. Every two weeks there is a written exam on the material learned in second seder — about 7 dapim every two weeks.
The Kollel is divided into 125 groups of 6–7 avreichim. Each week one delivers a chaburah on first-seder topics. Every group is half younger and half older avreichim. Chaburos are given outside the regular sedarim so learning isn’t interrupted.
Thanks to the great encouragement to write chiddushei Torah, at every siyum maseches about 100 avreichim put out a sefer or kuntress including all the sugyos and comments developed while learning.
“One who learns and does not review is like one who sows and does not reap.” The Chavuras Hakotzrim encourages avreichim to review past masechtos on an orderly calendar; each month hundreds are tested on the previous maseches at a set pace.
Everyone is aware of the great value of learning mussar. The Kollel has a special mussar seder for learning all the basic mussar sefarim.
Every afternoon break, dozens of avreichim remain to learn Tur–Bais Yosef and Shulchan Aruch on the sugyos learned in the Kollel, to reach the heart of the halachah.
Since hundreds remain during the lunch break so as not to break the continuity of learning, the Kollel arranges a meal for them, as well as rooms with beds to rest and gather strength for the rest of the day.
To help avreichim arrive on time, the Kollel runs a large transport system from all parts of the city and beyond — daily buses from Petach Tikvah, Elad, Achisamach and every corner of Bnei Brak.

Words of Gedolei Yisrael
on the unique excellence of Kollel Beis Hillel
Regarding Kollel Beis Hillel, which is very dear to my heart, where more than five hundred outstanding talmidei chachamim learn — and from which Torah radiates to the entire area.
“…From there, Torah radiates to all of Yisrael.”

Beis Hillel is a very prominent Kollel Avreichim. There are about 800 avreichim, all outstanding in their learning and yerei Hashem. This Kollel serves as a model for other kollelim — for fame, for glory, and for praise.

It’s a very unique and special Kollel — 700–800 avreichim. A tremendous hasmadah, a tremendous ru’ach — not only of hasmadah, but of middos tovos and yiras Shamayim. It is an example of how a kollel should be.

Yeshivas Beis Hillel in Bnei Brak is unique in that it grows gedolei Torah.

You should know that this chashuva Kollel — it’s not simple. We see that, baruch Hashem, the Kollel is so successful; it is truly because of its heilige beginnings.

The ikar makom of gadlus b’Torah today is the Kollel. Beis Hillel is among the places that is megadel b’Torah — a makom meyuchad b’yoser, an exceptional place. There is almost no other kollel in the world with that level.

It is almost impossible to describe the importance of this place, where the most esteemed avreichim in Eretz Yisrael learn. This is a place that grows gedolei Torah — founded on mussar and yiras Shamayim. There is hardly anything like it.
